Goutam Paul, the newly elected head of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education, promised on Tuesday that no one who passed the Teacher Eligibility Test would be overlooked and urged the numerous candidates who are protesting to have faith in the Board. According to him, the Board will now regularly hold the TET in Bengal every year, and primary school hiring will be done in a fair, transparent, and scientific manner twice a year. “Passing the TET is not equal to getting jobs, and we will go by the merit-based panel,” Paul remarked when addressing reporters.

A sit-in has been going on for more than 576 days in front of the Gandhi statue in the centre of the city by about 200 people who passed the TET in 2014 and 2016 but have not yet been hired as teachers. “I feel a lot of sympathy for them (the agitators). They can have peace of mind knowing that none of them, whose names appear on the merit list, will be overlooked. We shall simply follow the rules. We will fill the 11,000 openings that were recently announced. I implore them to trust in us “Added he. He elaborated on his claim that passing the TET does not guarantee employment by stating that not all students who pass the NEET test are guaranteed spots in medical school.

“For the NEET (Medical) exams, for instance, eight lakh individuals qualify, but only one lakh enrol in medical colleges nationwide depending on their rankings. Not all eight lakhs have the right to request housing at medical colleges. The Board has compassion for each and every TET applicant, but we must follow the law.” Paul stated that, if necessary, he is prepared for any further TET-related questions or investigations. We will adhere to the NCTE question format and post all information online. Of the 1,24,952 competent applicants from the 2016 TET, 1,18,821 signed up for the hiring process, and 42,627 were appointed.

In 2020-21 a total of 29,665 candidates registered for the recruitment process and 13,685 of them were empanelled 2020-21. Of them 13,564 have been appointed, he added.
