Following the release of the Common University Entrance Test results, UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar stated on Friday that universities would create the undergraduate admissions rank list based on “normalised” scores rather than percentiles or “raw marks.”

According to Kumar, the marks have been normalised to enable students who took the exam on the same topic on different days or shifts with an equal playing field. The Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG results for the first administration were released earlier in the day. “Universities will create rank lists based on normalised NTA scores rather than percentiles. Given that students took exams on the same topic on different days, the results have been normalised to give them an equal playing field “said Kumar. For each subject for which the exam was administered in various shifts, the normalisation of CUET scores had been done independently, he continued.

The normalisation formula using the “equipercentile method” has been decided by a panel comprising professors from Indian Statistical Institute, IIT Delhi and Delhi University.
