After a fight broke out between two groups and one student was shot, the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University suspended nine students for “spoiling” the tranquil academic environment of the school. Nauman Ali, a third-semester LLM student who was shot at by another group of students and received a superficial wound to the scalp, is among those who have been suspended. Police have also detained nine individuals in connection with the investigation, including some of the university-suspended students.
The chief proctor accused the students involved in the altercation of “politicising” the situation and “making it a regional dispute between the students of western Uttar Pradesh and the Mewat region” in notifications distributed on Friday. A similar notice has been given to the nine students. “Nauman Ali, a third-semester LLM student, has been suspended with immediate effect from the class. Other students who have been suspended include Mohammad Faisal, MA (Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy), Mohammad Shadab Choudhary, Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Nazim Khan, Diploma in Electrical Engineering Semester III, Nasrullah Ansari, BA Sanskrit, Sahil, Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Salman Khursid, BA (Faculty of Social Science), and Suhail, Diploma in Electrical Engineering.

The head proctor said in the notice that a fight broke out on Friday outside the library between students from the University Polytechnic’s Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Semester I classes Suhail, Sahil, Mohammad Shadab Choudhary, Nazim Khan, and Nasrullah Ansari. The notice stated, “The proctororial team had taken an instant action against the erring students after the security staff had brought the fighting students to the proctor’s office.” Salman Khurshid, a student of BA (Pass), Noman Ali, a student of LLM Semester III, and Mohd Faisal, a student of MA (Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy), Semester III, politicised the issue and made it a case of regional conflict between the students of western Uttar Pradesh and the Mewat region, it continued.
The warning stated that the students got into another brawl, this time in front of police, first at the old library and then at the Holy Family Hospital reception, despite the proctor’s office taking urgent preventive action. Noman suffered a head injury during the altercation, but Nauman Ali just had a superficial wound from a bullet to the head. “The competent authority has determined that the aforementioned students committed the aforementioned unlawful act inside the campus and at Holy Family Hospital in blatant violation of Jamia’s rules and regulations for initiating disciplinary action against them for ruining the tranquil academic environment of the campus and inciting panic among the students and staff, and has decided to refer the case to the appropriate authority.”
In the meantime, officials said on Friday that police had opened two cases and detained nine individuals in connection with the altercation involving the JMI students and the shooting event at the Holy Family Hospital in southeast Delhi. The Jamia Nagar and New Friends Colony police departments received the cases for registration.
