IIT Madras Revolutionizes Education with 'Device Engineering Labs'

By delivering fundamental and advanced scientific and engineering concepts to rural schools in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is bridging the gap between scientific understanding and practical application. This project seeks to give students practical learning opportunities, fostering their capacity for imaginative thought and effective application of scientific principles.

Introduction to ‘Device Engineering Lab’

The ‘Device Engineering Lab,’ spearheaded by ‘Teach to Learn’ (www.teachtolearn.co.in), is a program that introduces school students to the scientific concepts that underpin everyday devices. Furthermore, it leverages 3D-printing technology to create toys and household items, making learning not only informative but also fun.

A Three-Year Curriculum

The DEL initiative boasts a three-year curriculum targeting students in VIII, IX, and X or XI. This program features a range of cost-effective devices commonly used in students’ daily lives, aligning with school syllabi. From simple devices like cycle bells and calling bells to more complex ones such as geysers, microwave ovens, and even 3D printers, the lab covers a wide spectrum of technological wonders.

Fostering ‘A Culture of Making’

One of the primary objectives of this initiative is to connect IIT Madras students with their rural counterparts, fostering a ‘Culture of Making’ at the school level. This endeavor is not only about enhancing design and fabrication skills but also about instilling an entrepreneurial mindset that could provide future livelihood opportunities.

Course Components

The Device Engineering Labs program comprises two major training components running in parallel:

  1. Device Engineering Concept: Students engage in hands-on activities like dismantling and assembling devices, understanding their working principles, exploring the science behind these devices, and brainstorming potential applications.
  2. 3D Printing: Learners delve into the world of 3D printing, covering aspects such as designing (CAD), basic programming, and the printing process. The complexity of the devices and printed objects increases as students progress from the first to the third year. Students even get the chance to build a 3D printer from scratch, which could open doors to future career opportunities.

Expanding the Reach

IIT Madras is actively seeking partnerships with other institutes, NGOs, and corporates to establish more Device Engineering Labs in remote and rural areas, particularly in the North-Eastern states. The participation of industries and philanthropists is crucial for scaling up this project and benefitting students in rural government schools across India.

Project Lead’s Insights

Project Lead Prof. Pijush Ghosh from the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering at IIT Madras emphasizes the importance of instilling a ‘Culture of Making’ in India’s educational system. He highlights that through hands-on fabrication, students gain a deeper understanding of concepts and principles, making learning more engaging and boosting their confidence.

Prof. Ghosh extends his gratitude to Verizon India and Vertiv Energy Pvt. Ltd. for their generous support through CSR funding in establishing these labs. He hopes that more industries and donors will support this initiative, which holds the potential to greatly enhance the scientific aptitude of the country’s youth.

The Role of Students and Teachers

“The initiative of the Device Engineering Lab, a one-of-its-kind initiative of IIT Madras in school campuses, trains the students with hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge that induces them to create and co-create new devices in the Lab. This initiative in the longer run prepares the students to become young entrepreneurs,” says Mr. Sanath Kumar, Founder of Cambridge Public e-School, Krishnagiri.

“DEL gives Hands-on experience. Students always hear the words ‘Do not touch’ and ‘Do not break” but here, they could open the instrument to learn how they work. It is a great opportunity for the students in Government schools. This gives them ideas for starting their own business in the future,” comments Ms. PR Suryakala, Headmistress, GHS Karanaipuducherry, Chengelpet District.
