The Department of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur is the first of its type, integrating several engineering and scientific fields to offer a comprehensive answer to the nation’s challenges in civil and infrastructure engineering. According to IIT Jodhpur, the new department was created to educate a fresh batch of engineers capable of creating sizable infrastructures that are intelligent, sustainable, and resistant to climate change.
Two specialised groupings of in-demand courses, Infrastructure Engineering and Smart Infrastructure Systems, will be made available through the department’s BTech in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering programme. Within the four years of their BTech programmes, students will be able to obtain focused specialities in intelligent infrastructure, energy, or the environment. The institute also offers the option to combine BTech and MTech degrees. Additionally, they can complete a dual degree programme in either climate or energy within five years.
Among other topics, the Infrastructure Engineering course covers Infrastructure Planning, Management, and Engineering as well as Thermal and Nuclear Power Infrastructure. The Smart Infrastructure Systems offers courses on the use of AI/ML in civil and mechanical engineering as well as cyber-physical systems. The syllabus also includes a number of other areas.
Additionally, the department offers two MTech and MTech-PhD programmes in infrastructure engineering with specialisations in energy and environmental engineering “The BTech and MTech/MTech-PhD programmes were developed in close collaboration with the domestic and international business community. The IIT Jodhpur said in a statement that students who complete these courses will be superbly trained in smart infrastructure systems and proficient at using AI/ML to create digitalized construction and monitoring systems for large-scale infrastructures.
Ranju Mohan, head of the department of civil and infrastructure engineering at IIT Jodhpur, described the department’s distinctive features as follows: “Our goal is to produce the next generation of engineers through adaptive, flexible, and interdisciplinary training programmes rooted through cohesive interaction with research organisations, academicians, and industries. Our undergraduate and graduate programmes’ curricula are in line with this objective. Faculty members are working together to develop a platform for co-creation that will allow different stakeholders in infrastructure and civil businesses to work together to find answers to a range of societal problems.
The Department of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering at IIT Jodhpur is involved in a number of industrial consultancy research projects, including, among others, the Rajasthan government’s effort to link rivers and improve water transportation, air quality modelling, and climate modelling.
